What is Nitrous Oxide?

We believe in providing our patients with the most comfortable care possible. That’s why we provide complimentary nitrous oxide sedation alongside all of our dental treatments. You may be wondering what Nitrous Oxide is, what it does, and who can use it. If so, you’re in the right place.

What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

Nitrous Oxide sedation is a commonly used form of sedation used among dentists. It is used at the request of the patient for a more comfortable dentist appointment. The gas, also known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask worn throughout the procedure. When first administered, you may feel light-headed, or tingling or heaviness in the limbs. The sedation method is considered safe among the American Dental Association and is widely used for the pleasurable feelings and comfort it gives patients in the dentist office.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Do?

Laughing gas is safe to use and has many benefits to fostering a comfortable dental procedure. In the right amounts, the gas allows for a comfortable experience and patients typically are able to hear and respond to what is happening around them. However, if the gas is used in excessive amounts it can cause:

  • Headaches
  • Shivering
  • Excessive sweating
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fatigue

Our team is well trained on how to administer Nitrous Oxide and we take great care in making sure that at the end of the procedure, you are given oxygen to remove the remaining nitrous oxide in your system to help ease you out of sleepiness. If you do experience any of these symptoms during or after your procedure, let your dentist know immediately.

Who can use Nitrous Oxide?

Many people, including children, can use nitrous oxide as a sedative during a dentist appointment. Those who feel anxious or nervous during dental appointments may also find ease in this form of treatment. We typically recommend eating a light meal before the procedure and staying clear of food for a few hours after your procedure. It is also important to consult your dentist on whether it is safe for you to drive from your nitrous oxide treatment.

Who Should Not Use Nitrous Oxide?

It is important to consult your dentist on whether or not you are eligible to use Nitrous Oxide as a sedative. Even though Nitrous Oxide is safe and effective, it is important to let your dentist know if any of the following apply to you as they may affect your ability to receive the treatment.

  • You are within your first trimester of pregnancy,
  • You have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease),
  • You have a methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency or a cobalamin deficiency

If you are receiving treatment using bleomycin sulfate or have a history of emotional issues or drug addiction, Nitrous Oxide treatment may not be recommended.
