We want your dental treatment to be as convenient a process as possible. So, to help you learn everything you need to know about our office and the treatments we offer, we’ve pulled together some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from patients and their answers.

My last dentist told me I have periodontal disease. Do I really need to take this seriously?

Absolutely. Periodontal (gum) disease is a serious condition, and whether it’s at the early stage of gingivitis or a more advanced case of periodontitis, it’s critical to seek professional treatment. Periodontal disease is also common, with the CDC reporting that it affects roughly 45% of American adults.

Without treatment, periodontal disease can cause serious problems for both your dental and overall health:

  • Multiple studies have shown links between the periodontal bacteria in your mouth and heart disease. The bloodstream carries bacteria from the mouth. These bacteria may lead to inflammation of the arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack.
  • Individuals with deep periodontal pockets stemming from gum disease had an increased risk for abnormal electrocardiograph (ECG) results.
  • People with diabetes are 10 times more likely to develop periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Periodontal disease is correlated to low birth weight in children.

Do you take my insurance?

Give us a call! We accept most insurance plans, and we do everything we can to help each patient make the most of their dental insurance benefits. We understand that insurance policies are complex and often extremely difficult to understand, so you may not fully understand the extent of your coverage—and that’s ok.

While not all treatments are covered, we provide full insurance assistance, helping you understand your policy in depth. We’ll even complete and submit your dental insurance forms to help you get the biggest reimbursement possible. While not all patients are covered by dental insurance, we strive to help you get the maximum coverage you’re entitled to.

That said, dental insurance companies seek to reduce costs more than they seek to provide for proper dental care. Accordingly, they usually cover only basic dental services and exclude a variety of treatments.

A few treatments not commonly covered by dental insurance include:

Although these are important dental services that can greatly enhance the quality of life of our patients, dental insurance companies do not feel that they should have to pay for these services. That is why these services are rarely included in contracts with your employer.

Is fluoride necessary to maintain optimal oral health?

Studies have shown that fluoride can save teeth from decay, infection, and extraction. With the older adult population on the rise and advancements in dentistry, people are keeping their teeth decades longer than past generations. Still, caries (cavities) are a major threat.

Fluoride serves a number of functions in preserving dental health, including:

  • Reversing or stopping tooth decay
  • Maintaining strong tooth enamel by inhibiting mineral loss
  • Preventing cavities

When should my child start seeing the dentist?

Your child’s first appointment at our office should take place around his or her first birthday. We won’t usually perform any treatments during this appointment; it’s more a chance for us to get acquainted, to help your child start adjusting to the routine of seeing a dentist, and so we can make sure their teeth are developing as normal. After this first visit, we’ll need to schedule regular checkups and examinations once or twice every year.

How often should I see the dentist?

Generally, most adults should see the dentist twice a year for an exam and teeth cleaning. Maintaining these regular maintenance appointments helps to prevent tooth decay and keep your teeth healthy over the course of a lifetime.

Should I use a manual or electric toothbrush?

There are many arguments for each type of brush but the truth is, it’s more a matter of personal preference. Electric toothbrushes offer some advantages in convenience but with proper technique, you can keep your teeth strong and healthy using either a powered or a manual toothbrush. The most important thing is to brush teeth twice a day and floss daily, using good technique for strong oral hygiene.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies are rare, but they can be serious. In general, you should call our office if you think you’re having a dental emergency. If we’re closed or you feel that this is a serious or potentially life-threatening emergency, head to an emergency room or call 9-1-1. For problems like chipped or cracked teeth, lost permanent teeth, or things of that nature, we recommend you call our office during office hours if possible to receive guidance. For more serious emergencies like a potentially broken jaw, head to an emergency room immediately.

How is Invisalign® different from braces?

Invisalign® is a form of orthodontic treatment, which means it’s designed to straighten the alignment of the teeth instead of maintaining the health of the teeth themselves. Invisalign® uses a fundamentally different method to move teeth than traditional braces. While traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to move teeth, Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners. These aligners are nearly invisible when worn and easy to take out for eating and oral hygiene, making Invisalign® an extremely convenient way to straighten teeth and improve your smile.
