What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are used to provide a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth, allowing us to create artificial teeth that both look and function like natural teeth. Implants are made from a screw-like titanium post that’s inserted into the jawbone in the socket left behind by a missing or extracted tooth. Once inserted, the implant is topped with a dental crown that’s custom shaped and color matched to blend in with existing teeth.
What makes implants so effective is that titanium possesses a highly unique property called osseointegration; once inserted, the metal literally fuses to the jawbone. This provides a sturdy foundation for the crown and helps to distribute bite pressure evenly throughout the jaw, making for a stronger tooth and preventing bone loss.
Are Dental Implants Right for You?
Dental implants are a highly effective option for many patients. If you’re interested in finding out if implants are right for you, we can help. Dr. Sorgen can perform a comprehensive dental and radiographic examination of your mouth, as well as a review of your medical history to determine if implants are the best option. We’ll also take the time to talk with you and answer any questions you may have about implants.
The Dental Implant Procedure
Implants are placed during a minor surgical procedure, then covered with a temporary crown and left to heal for a few months before affixing the final, permanent crown.
The procedure is relatively simple and goes as follows:
- First, Dr. Sorgen will refer you to a skilled periodontist or oral surgeon who will place the implant into the jawbone. This involves a minor surgery, and your specialist will give you the option to use either local anesthesia, which will keep you comfortable but awake during the procedure, or general anesthesia, which will put you to sleep during the procedure.
- After the specialist places the implant and the site heals, Dr. Sorgen will attach a small post called an abutment that protrudes through the gums.
- Dr. Sorgen will then affix a temporary crown to the implant. This crown will remain in place while the implant heals and fuses to the jawbone, a process that usually takes three to six months.
- After the implant has fused to the jawbone, we’ll bring you in for a second procedure. During this appointment, Dr. Sorgen will remove the temporary crown and place a permanent crown. This crown will be customized to match the shape and color of your natural teeth, providing a lifelike replacement tooth to complete your new smile.
