What Are Dentures?
A denture, also called a complete denture, is a dental appliance that can recreate your smile from the ground up, giving you a beautiful smile at any age. Dentures lie flat against the gums, providing the perfect amount of support and replacement for your teeth. Modern dentures look and feel completely natural. Whether you want to replace all of your teeth, one dental arch, or even specific teeth, we can fabricate your dentures specifically to match the appearance of your natural teeth so it’ll be just like having your smile back.
Types of Dentures
Generally, dentures are made from acrylic, which is similar to plastic and allows us to easily customize the denture to fit your mouth and match the appearance of your natural teeth. Lower dentures are shaped like a horseshoe and sit only along the gums, leaving space for the tongue. Upper dentures are generally made with a piece of acrylic to cover the roof of your mouth, sitting both on the gums and also against the roof of the mouth. This design allows for more contact surface area in order to create palatal suction.
Aside from upper and lower, there are two primary ways dentures are constructed: removable and fixed. Removable options include:
- Conventional Dentures: These are fabricated only after the mouth has healed from any tooth extraction. Once the gums and soft tissue in the mouth have completely healed over, the dentures are placed with adhesive on a daily basis.
- Immediate Dentures: These are fabricated and inserted right away after the tooth extractions, and the tissue is allowed to heal underneath the denture. Even though immediate dentures provide a new smile right away, it’s important to be cautious while the tissue is still healing.
Meanwhile, fixed denture options include:
- All-on-4®Implant-Supported Dentures: These permanent, non-removable dentures are attached to the jaws using All-on-4® implant dentures. This is the longest-lasting, sturdiest option for replacing a full set of teeth, as the dental implants fuse to the jawbone and prevent the bone loss that can occur with regular dentures.
In many cases, dentures provide an effective, convenient way to create a complete, beautiful smile, even if you’re missing some or most of your teeth. With proper oral hygiene, conscientious care, and regular visits to our office for check-up appointments, dentures can help you maintain a gorgeous smile for a lifetime.
