What Is a Root Canal?
Root canals are one of the most common procedures in dentistry, with well over 14 million performed each year. Root canals allow us to save teeth that are severely decayed and damaged, preventing the need for extraction and letting you keep your natural smile.
Underneath the hard outer enamel and inner dentin of your tooth lies dental pulp: soft, fleshy tissue with nerves and blood vessels that carries blood and sensory information to and from the teeth. Normally, this pulp is well protected by the dentin and outer enamel. But if the pulp becomes exposed due to a crack in the tooth or a deep cavity, bacteria can infect the pulp. Left untreated, this infection will eventually cause the tooth to fall out and may spread into the jaw or surrounding teeth, causing serious problems.
About the Root Canal Procedure
If Dr. Sorgen determines that you need a root canal, he’ll start by anesthetizing the area with a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable, then carefully clean the area and remove all damaged or decayed tooth material and dental pulp. Once the region is free from decayed tissue and bacteria, he will shape the root canal and fill it with a strong, biocompatible filler material, returning the tooth to its former integrity. In a rare and complex case, Dr. Sorgen may elect to refer a root canal procedure to an endodontist in order to ensure the best possible outcome.
What Happens after a Root Canal Treatment?
After completing your root canal, we’ll work with you to choose the type of cosmetic restoration that works best for you and ensure your smile gets back to its natural beauty. Because root canals are so routine, post-treatment complications are rare, and most patients require little post-treatment care. The most important thing is to continue practicing a strong oral hygiene regimen to ensure your teeth stay healthy.
How Much Does a Root Canal Cost?
Root canal costs can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the severity of the decay. However, root canals are almost always less expensive than tooth extraction, which requires the additional treatment of replacement with an artificial tooth. We’ll talk with you to help you better understand the estimated costs during your consultation.
